Running

Today is the sixth time we have been out running since this new phase of our weight loss started, two weeks ago. I find it interesting that we both suddenly felt the need to exercise now that we’ve lost weight, when we previously only felt the need to sit on the sofa with a tub of ice cream. It seems to me that there is some physiological urge to exercise that we had overridden before with our high intake and stores of energy. I don’t believe that it’s just a change of attitude. There is definitely something else at play here.

Anyway, we started out with a ten minute jog around the area two weeks ago, and have now slowly moved it up to 30 minutes today. We have also found a route around Highgate Woods that makes it much more pleasant to run. We are definitely not the fastest runners in the woods, but I think at this point it is much more important that we are persistent and that we actually do run the whole time that we have set for ourselves without stopping to walk inbetween. Yes, we run by time rather than distance, because we have no idea how far anything is around here.

Already after six times of jogging, I can feel a huge difference in how heavy it is to breathe while jogging, how quickly I recover afterwards and how tired I am the next two mornings. I can definitely see this becoming a habit now. Even that crazy idea of running the London Marathon next year that I joked to my father about is beginning to look like it could actually become reality.
